About Type Rating Training in Europe (EASA)

A Type Rating is a qualification that allows holders of a commercial pilot licence to operate a specific aircraft type. With IFA Training’s innovative approach, highly qualified instructors, and state-of-the-art simulation technology, you will be well prepared to successfully complete this final step towards becoming fully qualified for commercial flight operations.

Certified training to fly the leading aircraft types in the industry

At IFA-International Flight Academy, we prepare pilots to operate specific aircraft types with confidence and safety through comprehensive type rating programmes. Whether you are a newly licensed pilot or transitioning to a new fleet, we offer certified training, internationally recognised and tailored to the demands of the commercial aviation sector.
A type rating is mandatory for operating any aircraft with a maximum take-off weight exceeding 5,700 kg or powered by jet engines. At IFA, you will find a range of approved courses for different aircraft types, delivered by highly qualified instructors and supported by state-of-the-art simulators.

Commercial or Airline Pilot - Type Rating

Did you know...?

The demand for Airbus and Boeing pilots is driven by the size of the global operational fleet

The recruitment of qualified pilots is directly linked to the number of aircraft in service and the aircraft types operated worldwide. Airbus currently leads the global commercial aviation market in terms of active fleet size, which translates into greater demand for pilots holding Airbus type ratings, particularly given the continued growth of its global fleet in 2024. About Type Rating

Type Ratings are a key part of many pilots’ professional development. With different aircraft types, training pathways, and airline requirements to consider, it’s natural to have questions.

A Type Rating is a certification that authorises a pilot to operate a specific aircraft type. While a commercial pilot licence allows a pilot to fly professionally, a Type Rating is required to operate larger and more complex aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737.

During the course, pilots learn the aircraft’s systems, normal and emergency procedures, performance, limitations, and operational techniques through theoretical instruction and simulator training.

Obtaining a Type Rating is an essential step for pilots who wish to work for airlines, as it ensures they are fully prepared to operate a specific aircraft safely and efficiently.

On average, a Type Rating course lasts between 4 and 8 weeks, depending on the aircraft type, training schedule, and the student’s previous experience. It generally includes ground school, fixed-base simulator training, full-flight simulator sessions, and line training.

Yes, pilots can hold multiple Type Ratings.

Many professional pilots obtain additional Type Ratings throughout their careers as they move between airlines, aircraft fleets, or different areas of aviation. For example, a pilot may be qualified on both the Airbus A320 family and the Boeing 737, provided they have successfully completed the required training and proficiency checks for each aircraft type.

Each Type Rating requires specific theoretical and practical training, including simulator sessions and assessments, to ensure the pilot can operate that aircraft safely and in accordance with regulatory requirements.

The Boeing 737 is one of the most common Type Ratings among airline pilots. Other popular Type Ratings include the Boeing 777 and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner for long-haul operations.
Pilots can change aircraft specialisation whenever they wish by adding additional Type Ratings to their pilot licence. Many pilots transition from the Airbus A320 to the Boeing 737, and vice versa, depending on airline requirements and career opportunities.
Yes. Many regional airlines operate Embraer aircraft, making them a valuable starting point for newly qualified pilots before progressing to larger jet aircraft.
Yes, both the ATR 42 and ATR 72 require a Type Rating. These turboprop aircraft are widely used on regional routes, particularly across Europe, Asia, and Africa.
An ATR Type Rating is ideal for pilots who want to build flight hours with regional airlines. It provides valuable experience in multi-crew commercial operations and is often more cost – effective compared with jet aircraft Type Ratings.
