Flight Proficiency Check (LPC) – Pilot License Renewal

Operational proficiency check for the renewal of flight licences

Be prepared for more results more efficiency more skills

Keep your qualifications valid

The Licence Proficiency Check (LPC) is the assessment that ensures airline pilots maintain their operational skills and knowledge at the highest level. During the LPC, pilots are evaluated on normal and emergency scenarios, simulator exercises, and aircraft-specific procedures, ensuring accuracy, safety, and compliance with regulatory standards.

In addition to proficiency checks, we offer Type Ratings for a range of commercial aircraft, enabling pilots to expand their careers and operate different aircraft types with confidence:

  • ATR 42 / 72 – Highly efficient regional aircraft
  • A320 – A widely used single-aisle jet for domestic and international routes
  • B737 NG – A benchmark aircraft in commercial passenger transport
  • B757 / 767 – Medium- and long-haul aircraft for domestic and international operations
  • B777 – A wide-body jet designed for high-demand international routes
  • E190 – A modern regional jet focused on comfort and performance

By combining the LPC with current Type Ratings, pilots not only meet regulatory requirements but also strengthen their ability to operate different aircraft safely, competently, and with excellence.

Revalidation

Duration: 2 Hours on FFS
A simulator check is carried out annually, or semi-annually for airline pilots, and is overseen by a qualified examiner.

FEF

Renovation

The training plan is determined on a case-by-case basis by the Head of Training, taking into account the following factors:
- Pilot experience;
- Aircraft complexity;
- The time that has passed since the
- Qualification has expired;
- If the Pilot has another valid Rating;
- If the pilot is current on another Type.

Questions and answers

LPC

According to the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Part-FCL regulations, a proficiency check is the demonstration of a pilot’s ability to revalidate or renew ratings and privileges. It is carried out as a formal assessment in a certified full-flight simulator that accurately represents the aircraft’s performance and cockpit environment.

In practice, it is a structured evaluation where the pilot must show compliance with regulatory standards, including handling skills, technical knowledge, and appropriate responses to different operational situations.

The License Proficiency Check (LPC) is a recurring assessment used to renew or revalidate a pilot’s licence and associated ratings. It applies to both commercial and private pilots and is conducted in a full-flight simulator.

During the check, pilots are required to demonstrate competence across a range of flight scenarios while following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and applying effective crew resource management (CRM).

The assessment includes normal operations as well as abnormal and emergency situations that cannot be safely reproduced in real flight. For example, a simulated engine failure may be included, requiring the pilot to respond correctly under pressure while maintaining control of the aircraft.

Both commercial and private pilots who operate aircraft under an EASA licence may be required to complete an LPC, depending on their type rating and operational privileges. It is most commonly associated with pilots holding type ratings for complex, multi-crew aircraft.

The LPC is carried out in a certified full-flight simulator at an approved training organisation. The simulator replicates the aircraft’s cockpit, systems, and performance, allowing realistic training and assessment without the risks of actual flight.

The assessment covers a wide range of competencies, including:

– Normal flight operations
– Abnormal procedures
– Emergency handling
– Compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs)
– Crew Resource Management (CRM)
– Decision-making under operational pressure

No. While both use a simulator, the LPC is a formal assessment. It is conducted by an examiner and results in a pass or fail outcome, whereas training sessions are focused on learning and skill development without formal grading.

Yes. If a pilot is qualified on multiple aircraft types, a separate LPC must be completed for each type rating (for example, Airbus A320 and Airbus A350).
If a pilot does not meet the required standard, additional training and a recheck are usually required. The exact process depends on the operator, training organisation, and applicable regulatory framework.
It is generally recommended to complete the LPC before the current validity expires, often up to three months in advance, to avoid any interruption in operational privileges.

The LPC (Licence Proficiency Check) is a practical assessment designed to verify a pilot’s operational competence and compliance with regulatory requirements for the maintenance, revalidation, or renewal of a flight licence.

Flight Simulators in Portugal

Our Advanced Flight Simulators

Train with advanced and immersive simulators that offer cutting-edge technology to prepare you from the fundamentals through to the real cockpit.

Our Advanced Simulators

A modern training centre requires technology to match. With an Airbus simulator and a Boeing simulator, we create training experiences tailored to your progression, from MCC through to Type Rating preparation. The quality of training depends directly on the equipment used. That is why we invest in high-fidelity simulators that accurately replicate the flight environment, aircraft systems, and dynamic behaviour throughout all phases of operation.
Students have the opportunity to experience, make mistakes, correct them, and repeat the process – all under the close supervision of qualified instructors. This translates into greater confidence and improved performance in advanced stages such as Type Rating training or airline selection processes.
